Play them in that order for maximum effect

Indeed. Many people say "pilgrim's quest and stone of balance", but that means you're playing part 2 first and then part 1. It is easily possible. In fact, I played Pilgrim's quest without knowing that it was a sequel, and only when I finished it did I notice that it was the second part in a trilogy. So I decided to play the first part before attempting the third part. When I finished SoB, I was disappointed to find that the third part wasn't ever made. So I'm telling you now to spare you that feeling.

Both with SoB/PQ and Cloud Castle 1&2 (which also is a trilogy without a third part) the second part is better than the first, IMO. SoB is good enough to play anyway. CC1 is short enough to play anyway. In both cases playing the first part is worthwhile because you will know a bit of the world before you start with part 2.

While we're on trilogies, there's another one I would like to suggest: Friends Beyond. Unfortunately there are several bugs in them (so save often). And in FB2, once you go somewhere, you can't always go back (that is intentional). So to see everything, you need to start over several times. In case you go play it, when someone says he gives you an "ice sword", and you don't have it in your inventory afterwards, that's a bug in the engine which makes it almost impossible to finish it (it might be specific to Freedink). Please ask here if you encounter it, I have a workaround for it. Make sure you have a save before you got the sword.

The reason I like FB is that it is a bit hollywood-like, with heavy moral cutscenes at times. If you like that, there's another dmod which you'll like even more: "Eternal Suicide - Chapter 0 - Wasted life" (it's not so heavy, but it's very movie-like). It was meant to be part 0 of a long list, but unfortunately it never got a sequel.
