No, the patch doesn't make it easier to get past the slimes! 
Just run through the slimes, don't stop. Or stop and fight if you're strong enough, then you can get past them since they give small hearts. Search for the secret island to get you some extra strength if you're not strong enough. Or talk to the little girl, you'll get some extras from that as well.
