One of the biggest misperceptions is that ignoring a troll will stop him.

Yes, I can see someone getting more and more desperate for attention and trying bigger and worse things. But can you link me to somewhere that ignoring a troll has been tried? I mean consistently over a long period of time. I'd like to see what's actually happened in those cases. Honestly I doubt that a whole forum can get themselves to do it at all. Someone will break and reply. Still, I think it's a good idea in principle, even if it does make the troll more desperate. If the troll has to carry on the whole debate themselves, they'll have less to say than if other people are reacting and giving the troll things to reply to.

Banning is the only solution.

I agree that would work, but what can we do until we have that option?
