Sure, I think the M9 could be replaced with something heavier like a .40 cal, and the M-4 (we rarely use M16's) could be upgraded for a 308, however understand that there are several factors for us not doing it.
1. Cost.
2. The weapons are still effective. Both these weapons while somewhat weak against body armor make up in large mag capacity.
3. They don't make them like they used to.
Plus we have been dumping our money into places where it is more effective (F-22's, F-35's...speaking of which I saw 10 F-16's go against a F-22 and they all lost to it). Truthfully where we are slightly weak is cyberwarefare.. That's it. (and we are not even touching on the classified stuff)
Talk about the guns all you want.. We excel everywhere else... To include training. "It's not about who has the bigger stick, but who is swinging it".
