Hmm, yes and no. I think spam for the sake of spam is worse than not posting, because it's the general image of the site that is hurt by this.

It's because people like you and I check back for updates so often we get bored when there's no golden "new" sign anywhere
But most people check once or twice per day, so for them, the spam is just annoying.
