Let me heat that up for you... 
I watched this documentary once which had a similar idea, except instead of the cells getting smaller with each successive division, the DNA got increasingly damaged. They said the telomeres of the DNA (end pieces to protect it from damage) gradually got shorter and eventually, after too many divisions, entirely dissapeared, leaving the DNA (more) vulnerable to mutations.
