Reply to Ubuntu Freedink: Can't pick anything up.

I run Ubuntu 10.04 ("Lucid Lynx") and found Freedink v1.08 in the repository. Curious, I installed it. Seems to work -- almost.
I walk Dink out of the house and around to the feed bag. No matter how I position him, Space bar causes him to say he can't see anything to do with this, and Ctrl causes him to punch and kick. That's all I can get him to do.
I understand from the mother and the walkthrough that I am supposed to make him take the feed bag to the pig pen and toss feed to the pigs. But there seems no way possible to accomplish that.
I am at a total loss here. Am I missing something, or is my version of Freedink broken?
