First of all, if you go to the files section of the site you can choose to sort the d-mods in order of rating. Most of those ratings are fairly reliable I must say, so it's a good starting point for you to seek out the good d-mods
I'd definitely consider playing the classics, like Prophecy of the Ancients, Stone of Balance, Pilgrim's Quest, FIAT, Cloud Caste 2, ... Those d-mods are all much larget than the original game and offer new gameplay elements across the board. But there's PLENTY of good d-mods in varying sizes and quality that you should enjoy, don't only stick to the highest rated or you'll miss out on some hidden gems
