Can't get last key

I am at the end with Cthunik and Skark in Machine Mountain. I killed the first two zombies easily and collected the key, but when I killed the 3rd zombie, I left the screen trying to get it. Making the mistake of thinking it was a 'spawning monster,' I saved and left for a while. Is there a way to get the key from it so I can continue?
