Infinite map screens would be most useful for when you run into the border, I think. 
Say you started on screen 1, and now want to extend the map upwards? Just move the whole map 50 screens down, change all warps and such: Fun for the whole family! Or another scenario, start on screen 400, want to create another sizeable area on the map? Sorry, out of room, you'll have to settle for a shootty serpentine cave.
