There's no way to use it without using IRC, the chat is still an IRC chatroom whether you access it with the java client, mIRC, ChatZilla, or whatever. I'm no expert on the subject, but I've personally found IRC pretty safe to wander about, much safer than browsing the web normally. Problems only arise when you accept files sent to you by people you don't know, or click suspicious links.
