Well I finally had the time to fiddle with my vista problem - I was unable to create or edit anything except folders. While I realized that this was a permissions problem, all attempts to adjust permissions to allow access to my own files would not work. Apparently, even as an administrator, I don't have full control over any folders except for perhaps the desktop and "My Documents", and from what I understand, in Vista these are actually junctions not folders.

So, the solution that worked for me, is that I downloaded a little registry hack, that lets you easily, yet time-consumingly, take control over a folder/file. Here is the url for the hack:

And people wonder why I use a non-Windows system. Tsk. (It's Linux, btw.)

Well, this laptop was a gift from my dad, and I didn't choose the OS. I've used Windows 2k for years and have been quite happy with it. My only complaint with it is that it isn't currently supported by microsoft, and so they won't be releasing the new DirectX drivers for it.

Windows Vista, despite its numerous annoyances and problems, is at least supported and will be for quite some time. As great as Linux/Unix/DOS/Warp are - they aren't going to support modern games to my satisfaction.

App, app. Wrong.

It's not that the OSes don't support games, it's that the game makers don't support the OSes. Quite different scenario. 'sides, that fact is currently changing. It'll take a while, but change is underway.
