First file....d-mod or something else?

I'm trying to decide what to make as my first release, a d-mod, or some sort of other file.

I want to make a d-mod, but perhaps something else that is not quite such a big project would be better.

But I could just make a romp.

***Any suggestions?***

Daniel, there are clowns.
The only real way to learn Dink and all its abilities and limitations is to try one making a d-mod yourself, which I would suggest you start. However, a d-mod doesn't have to be what you release first and it doesn't have to be a romp. My first real attempt was an epic. It was never released, but I learned a TON about Dink along the way, and even released the ghost knight I had made for it, which was, in fact, my first submitted file.

That sounds like good advice Striker. I think I'll just see how my d-mod develops, and let my imagination run free!

But I certainly want some new graphics for this d-mod, but have no skills in art, sadly. I know it's a lot to ask but would anybody be interested in making some for me?

It's true what Striker says; you learn the most when making a D-mod, since that involves a lot from which you can learn and that can be useful if you want to make another file. You have to do though what you want most.

Well, there are good artists in DN, but I think most want to make graphics for their own D-mod. Though you never can tell...

But why don't you give it a try yourself? You could start by modifying the old graphics, using Paint Shop Pro. Or adjust some a bit more by adding something to it. Or make a small animation of 3 or 4 frames for starters. You can find tutorials on the development page about making graphics, so check that too.

And, BTW, good D-mods don't depend on new graphics. There are great D-mods that use *only* the old graphics.

Good luck!

Thank you bin, a very concise and informative reply.

The main reason I wanted new graphics was that I have a idea for what I want to make the d-mod about, but it would involve new graphics for the main character.

But I could try editing those from the original, despite my concerns about my graphical "talent".

I don't have that much graphical talents either, but I guess there is nothing wrong with just giving it a try. If you really want some cool new ones, then you should use a blender, but don't ask me how that works, since I'm just starting with that myself!

But modifying with PSP is real easy. Just use hue map or something like that. Just experiment a bit. And a blue Dink or something like that, can be real cool too!

My advice, just start playing around with the d-mod tools. Don't worry about making anything anyone else would want to play, just experiment. (and read help files and such of course) Once you have the hang of it, start work on a real project (ideally a smallish one). I still have my first "d-mod" set aside for testing wierd stuff before I put it in whatever I'm really working on.
