Where are the other staff pieces?

I went through and now have 7 of the 9 pieces of the staff. I know there are a BUNCH in the first town but haveb't been able to unearth them. Any hints? I went to the tournament and was dead by the time the screen pupped up! ARGH! never had a chance to fight!
