You know, I think somebody already made one...

Seriously though, a LOTR d-mod is a poisoned chalice (or just a bad idea... I'm not sure which). Think about it, who is going to be satisfied/impressed by ant LOTR graphics a dinker makes?

Surely something on a smaller scale, something less ambitious, would be a much better starting point.

Like "The Hobbit".

Oh God this makes me remember my first "project" in the Dink community...

Trust me, if you can't do 90% yourself, I suggest NOT starting with it. Back in the days when I knew absolutely nothing about scripting I assembled a small team to make a FF7 d-mod. Paul was even in it.

Needless to say, it was a crazy idea. Not because it was based on FF7, but because I had absolutely no clues as to what was possible and what wasn't.

Are you kidding? It be a hella hard time to make The Hobbit. It would be so much conversation/cut-scene scripting it'g be insane to attemp. Furthermore, It'd take some creative map making just to portray the grand scale it takes place on. Each place would have to feel unique and believable, without varrying too much from the scenery leading up to it. Think of all the new graphics! What would give us the feel the they are in the depths of the goblin layers, and not just any other cave? How would we tell one land from another? How would we show the gradual changes, vastly open terrain, and the general feel one gets reading a book so immersive and descriptive? Would any d-mod do it justice?

That is the problem with doing The Hobbit. To immagine doing LOTR, immagine the Hobbit d-mod cubed.

So who sealed the fate of that mod, you guys or the Squenix dogs?

Both, actually. At the time I was less than bright and actually asked Square for permission... Which, naturally, they didn't give.

I guess they would have never noticed it had we gone through with it, but because I started to realize the project wasn't going to work (mainly because of my extremely limited knowledge of the Dink engine back then) things just got dropped.

do you mean it is impossible or what? i feel it wouldnt be so hard, most people like aragorn so the start could be in bree playing as him you know, just in the beggining we could make a text that said what has happened to frodo and all other, or maybe a movie! then it would follow him on his quest to the end of the black gate! three d-mods of each movie!
that shouldn't be so hard, or?

DinkDragon, you're underestimating what it takes to develop a d-mod. If you've played Stone of Balance or Pilgrim's Quest, know that those d-mods took nearly a year to develop. I won't even start about FIAT...

It's not impossible, but I'd start with some smaller stuff like maybe a mini-quest involving aragorn (if you must). Then you'll familiarize with the capabilities of the Dink Engine and maybe you can take on some harder stuff afterwards.

If someone is really going for it, you just should let him. Cause, there is always a way...

Perhaps Kyle was reminded of his first D-Mod because it too was an overly-ambitious project based on a popular franchise.
