I have a problem with a map...

I have tried to make a map, by saving a screen dump in DinkFrontEdit with 'print screen' and then paste it into the graphics program I use (Gimp). When I change palette to a palette saved from another dink bmp.file, the colours still look ugly.

Why? How do I solve this problem?

I don't know if you can... it cetainly doesn't appear as an option when loading a palette inside GIMP to "maintain indexes" (option used in Paint Shop Pro) which is what you need. I've not been able to find it inside Grokking the Gimp document. It may well be possible to do with the GIMP using a script that someone may have written... but you best option may be to use either Paint Shop Pro or Photoshop if you can get one of these. Note Dinker's PAL will not do what you want either.

============================

But (silly me I forgot this) use WinDinkEdit to do the screen grab. It saves in bmp format with the correct colours inside your DMOD directory as Screen001.bmp.

Plus as an added bonus it makes all unused square black so if you want to turn them into sea or mountains it's so much easier.

Therefore just... fire up WDE, load your DMOD - turn off the character display (if you have it on - I don't) hit spacebar and then watch the map displayed. Go to Tools menu and select take screenshot... if this option is grab then select a screen and TAB back out and it should be fine.

Now, fire up GIMP, load in the screen shot and go apply the Dink Palette using error diffusion, re save file and you're done!

Hmm, how do I get this "Tools menu" in WDE?

Any fool can use a computer. Many do.
The Tools menu is not available when you haven't loaded/opened a D-Mod. First open/load a D-Mod, then click a mapsquare, return and the Tools menu is available.

I done that now. But I don't see any Tools menu, just the same help text as before. Which key should I press i order to save the map?

You do have to first open the DMOD, select a map square with the mouse, TAB to get back to the full map, hit SPACEBAR to see all the map, then you find the 5th menu along from the left "Tools", and in the drop-down menu is the option "Take Screenshot".

Alternative hit ALT-T and then the S key to get it done.

Hehe, I didn't understand your instructions, because I used the old editor before. I have downloaded the new one now.
Unfortunately I have problems opening my DMOD with this new editior, but that's another problem.
