Today I was catching up on one of my favorite tech shows, Always On, and they had a segment on an upcoming gadget called The Leap. It's a little USB device that lets you interact with your computer in 3D like in Minority Report. I read in their FAQ that they came up with it to make 3D modeling easier, which made me think of Iplaydink and Kerrek. I don't have any specific use for it now, but kinda I feel like getting one anyway and finding a use for it!

It was the first one I played and you spelled it wrong. Also most of the "Deaths" where because I went in the locked zones at the time.

Hah, I just noticed the sudden presence of punctuation and order in those two sentences.

Now you know what I mean.

Hmm..
I really have to say I don't think this the future for computer interaction.. I mean it looks fun and all, like something for childrens computer games... but it can never replace a tablet, a mouse and a keyboard when it comes to making 2d and 3d art in the computer.. Waving you arms around like that is not exactly an ideal way to work, and sitting like that for hours would seriously hurt you, haha..

With a tablet you have something to draw on, you have penpressure altering your input and you can rest you arm while sculpting/painting...

I had some of those thoughts, although I think their idea is that the Leap won't be as tiring to use as the Kinect because it will detect finer movements. I bet you could slouch over with your elbow on the desk and just wiggle your fingers to do stuff.

But I do wonder about the lack of tactile feedback. Physical objects give you resistance that helps you control your actions, but for something like this you have to watch the screen and make judgments based solely on what you see.

Still, I'm sure 3D modeling with several fingers at once in three actual dimensions would be faster than with a single point using a pen or mouse or even with a few fingers on a flat screen.

good for those with rsi and arthritis if grannies use the computer - plus fatties can move now and not get chunkier sitting still - exercise while u compute hehe hey its a start

Yeah.. it might work good with some 3d-modelling techniques, like sculpting for still images, where you really don't have to think about the underlaying polygon-structure because you don't have to animate it and a long render-time doesn't matter...
but it isn't that simple when making models to be used in games or animations..

I would like to see some kind of pottery application using this though... that would be cool ;D
