I was just shooting from the hip, teasing, giving the young man a hard time, as it were.
What I meant was that in my experience, just declaring/pronouncing something and making little effort otherwise usually did not amount to much in the way of results, certainly not instantaneous results, which seemed to be the implied expectation.
Something like "Open Sesame" and presto, there's some treasure. Friendships, etc. usually take time and work, in my opinion.
Then again, everybody seems to have taken a shine to him, so what the hell do I know?
