Let me heat that up for you... 
choose the 'shape' that isn't associated, apply it to a tile, select the tile, and press q. now you are in the hardness editor. click an empty space to apply hardness to that pixel (it is magnified) or click on hardness to get rid of it.

if you want to set it as default hardness for that tile, then select the hardness. press c, select the tile you wish to have the hardness, and press d. now, every time you place that tile in the editor, it will have that hardness applied to it
