If you don't have an account, just leave the password field blank.
If you go for Fedora Core, 4 and 5 aren't officially supported anymore (as in, the repositories aren't updated, I doubt you won't be able to find souls willing to help you). 8 is about to come out in 9 days from now. Check http://fedoraproject.org for details.
For Ubuntu, they have started including the shiny 3D stuff by default from version 7.10. Check http://ubuntulinux.org, same for Xubuntu and Kubuntu I think. The difference between those is the default desktop environment. If you like Ubuntu, but prefer the KDE desktop environment, go for Kubuntu. If you like Xfce better, choose Xubuntu. You can even have all of them (desktop environments) installed at the same time, and you can choose which one to use when you log in. Note that this may create a lot of junk in your /home directory, as KDE, Gnome and Xfce will store preferences there.
I don't know much about the other distros. I started with using Ubuntu (version 5, a year and a half ago). After that I used SimplyMEPIS for a few weeks, and now I'm on an ancient version (5) of Fedora Core.
I recommend trying out a few for yourself, and see which one you like best. Make a separate "Linux" partition on your HD and try a new one every few weeks!
EDIT: if you do that, you may also want to create a separate partition for your /home directory.
