: I spent (wasted) 100 gold coins to cross the bridge (using the 200 gold coins given by the wizzard). I also founds 200 gold coins upper north. Though I have 300 gold coins, I still miss 100 to buy a longsword.

Well, you need to find some secrets in the town that you are in, try burning down trees with your fireball magig...also, killing monters gives you gold and there are alot of treasures hidden around just waiting to be found.
You can also sell alk tree nuts somewhere for 2 gold and even in the first place ( before you crossed the bridge), there is a secret if you burn trees in the south east of the wizards house.
