Scale - if you are creating an epic - it is a big story (or at least the very nature of the word epic lends it this quality)
Of course you could create an epic about a war between two countries, or a personal revenge saga that moves a character across the known (and unknown) world ... SOB was the latter...
One of PQ's core ideas was to have Dink do something that he thought was good and heroic and because of his naivety bring about the end of the world - of course once he's done that, what better story to have than he trying to fix the damage he caused.
