i finally got around to playing the mod, not bad. if you say you're going to release a patch, then i'll wait til then to review it. yes, i think you should just continue the story and make the dmod quite a bit longer and with many new things, so that the people that have already played it won't mind seeing something new. there are portal graphics available in the development section, if you need those.
