Hmmm, there has to be something specific with your systems... I don't have a problem using

P4 2.8 512 MB RAM 128 MB Raedon graphics card... runing in 32 bit mode.

I've not tried opening a big DMOD, but Sjoerdje's Quest opens fine, move trees around, add a dead mother...
