I'm stuck and even the walkthrough can't help...

I'm in the beginning, just entered King Eric's kingdom, got into the fence with the slayer claw and I am supposed to get the Pure Evil Hammer from the guy in the fence.
Unfortunately I can't talk to him, all I can do is "leave"?! Did I do anything wrong or is there something wrong with the game? Will I have to stay up all night trying or is there anyone out there who can help???!!!
