Well, if you calculate the sum of each number you can possibly get, it's always either 9 or 18. So, for example with that 3087 number, it has a seven in it and you picked 7. So, you enter in that box: 308. If you make the sum of that, it's 3 + 0 + 8 = 11. Now this is more than 9 so the total of the four digits has to be 18. Then 18 - 11 = 7 and that's the number you've picked.
