Daniel, there are clowns.
I still salute the mods that actually stuck around during that time and did the best they could. You guys are awesome.

It's just one of those things that can happen to an internet community during its twilight years (no matter how long that twilight lasts). People come and go and eventually it'll pick up one or more kids who feel powerless and pathetic in their day-to-day lives, so they go online to find the small measures of success or recognition that their personal life lacks. Sometimes they discover they are good playing games and pwning n00bs, some discover that they're highly creative and their works are appreciated, and then there are the few who find that they are *still* not good at much of anything. Even in a small community, they have no way to overcome their deep personal flaws and be acknowledged as somehow special. They take the easiest route, find ways to get negative attention and have enough stick-to-itiveness to be recognized by what remains of a community. It provides a feeling of some significance to what has been, until then, a life unfulfilled and grossly insignificant, even on a human scale.

Most people who do this eventually come into their own in some sort of way, grow up, and start finding ways to actually have power and meaning in their own life. Others, well... this may be as good as it gets for them.
