As for the contest, I usually dislike silent protagonists, because they harm the identity of the main character. However, there are some games where it worked out well and I think Dink-like games can pull it off (like Zelda).
One question, does the silence need to persist throughout the whole game? Can the main character be "cured" of the condition by the very end? As a sort of resolution?
