There's a reason why 'No plot, no problem' is a trope. Because it's been done a lot of times with great success. Even today.

Now, there is no singular essential part to a game, there are simply a large gathering of different aspects that make up a game. There are graphics, which can lend to a game's overall appearance. There is music, which can create tension and sorrow, happiness and excitement. There's even storylines, which can drive the player to continue playing. However, not one single part is purely essential.
