The biggest problem is that people that are too young to think for themselves have these beliefs thrown on them, and then they are taught "lessons" from the bible. By the time they've grown old enough to question it they have already become too comfortable with the belief to let go of it without a fight. And thus it can be difficult for them to think clearly. And most of the lessons the Bible teaches them are so contradictory it can confuse even believers. They have to "pretend" the Bible means certain things it doesn't say or else their entire basis of moral and belief blows up in their face. And yet the Bible says thou shalt not add nor remove from it.

I imagine that this constant teetering between what the Bible says and what it means is extremely uncomfortable for any religious person who actually thinks about it.
