Hey Shevek!
What are you making? If you are new to 3d modelling and if you are planning to animate what you are making I strongly advice you not to do any sculpting! The reason is that this will break your topology (if you use dynamic topology or require a very high poly mesh if you don't), this will make rigging much harder.

Sculpting is often used as one step in a professional workflow where you design a lowpoly mesh, sculpt it, and render what's called a normal map which converts the geometry into an image which can then be used on the original low-poly version to simmulate details (this is really and over-kill if you render it to dink).

I'd love to help you with tips if you are new to blender, I've been using it for like four years now and I'm currently studying computer graphics in a swedish university.. I love to talk about the subject
