let's say that you have 3 screens, arranged like this
N
E M
you place a sprite on screen E, but it goes up past the top of that screen. if you wanted that sprite to show up on screen N, then you would turn screenmatch on. otherwise, the sprite would only appear on screen M and would therefore be cut off. now let's say you placed a sprite on screen E that goes over farther to the right than the border of the screen. if you didn't want the sprite to show up on screen M, then you would leave screenmatch off. hope that helps
