Jenyth, I found out choosing 'health' on the power ups, was a useful option: it extended my life line. I then had to go and get hearts from pillbugs to fill it up.
Then I alternate between strength and defence...and magic?
No elixirs available (in the first part) or a shop to buy them from. But I rarely use elixirs unless absolutely necessary, like a boss kill.
Better to save often, storing points then getting the power ups.
