I don't have a problem with using any copyrighted material in fan productions. It's like you're not allowed to make a drawing of Mickey Mouse on paper yet every kid does it too.
We're here to unearth our latent creative instincts, so we should have all the possible tools at our disposal. As long as nobody makes any money out of it, who cares is my opinion on the matter. Of course, it must be credited properly, that is a basic rule of respect.
