As to why society makes a big deal of it: religion. Nearly every aspect of our society is influenced by religion, namely Christianity, which teaches that there is a black and white, a right and wrong, and losing your virginity before marriage is WRONG.
I read that it's all because only the woman can be a 100% sure who the father is, especially in the old days when there weren't any DNA-tests and such. Men want to be sure
that they take care of their own offspring, and not of the offspring of the neighbour, so the best way to ensure that is to make sure the woman he's married to is a virgin. All goes back to the caveman-genes and the survival of the fittest...
