I like the idea of a dragon skin carpet! As for something going wrong... You could always have the robot things from Mystery Island come back. They could still be baddies, or if they got fixed (I can't quite remember the ending, it was ages ago that I played it) they could be good guys or something... I've always liked them, it's a pity they're not in any other DMOD's yet (as far as I'm aware, anyway).
