Well, almost 2 years after the release of Dink Smallwood in 1997, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of time was released in October '98 with approximately 8 game-figures having worked on it.
Now if we look at pics from some of the biggest games of '97:
Myth: The fallen lords
Age of Empires
Fallout
we realise that Dink Smallwood was actually quite good for the time.
Link's Awakening was initially released in 93, but the version depicted is LoZ:Link's Awakening DX released for GBA in 98.
So, Dink's graphics are superior to Zelda's when it is released, inspite of the fact that Nintendo has probably finished it's OoT graphics by that point. WINNER: Dink
Story-line: Zelda's is undeniably superior in 1998; Nintendo has, however, been releasing Zelda games for over 10 years. So Dink's story is good, horribly linear like Zelda's, and all crammed into one game, unlike Zelda's money-machine. WINNER: Zelda
Sound: Other then the fact that Zelda has had 11 years to develope it's recognizable soundtrack, Dink's is on-par. Zelda has a little boy who's like "hiiiiya!" Dink is a pubescent try-hard who's like "Hoo-ah!" WINNER: Dink
Gameplay/Engine: In '97, Dink's gameplay was superior to Zelda's on account of the fact that you could kill ducks. In Zelda, there was only one way to do things. And until OoT, the combat system was very frustrating - following the hit/run/hit model. However, Dink's semi-freeform gameplay was matched by Zeldas diversity of characters, monsters, dungeons etc. Yet this may also be Dink's redeeming point: An amazing world created with limited graphics/ scripts/ character variation. WINNER: It's a tie.
Re-playability/Life-span: Dink - until you get a girlfriend. See also Dink edit. Zelda - until the next one is released; even then, you'll only play each one once, because they take too bloody long to get through a story that's only orignal once every 3 years. WINNER: Dink
OVERALL: Dink Smallwood - 4; Legend of Zelda - 2.
