I disagree, Striker.

Metacritic gives Bioshock an average review score of 96% on Xbox 360 and PC, as well as 94% on PS3. In my opinion, Bioshock had a truly fantastic opening couple of hours that oozed atmosphere; the opening was a class above anything else I had seen this generation.

However, I felt the game soon revealed itself to be a rather generic FPS. I certainly didn't feel it was worthy of the accolades it was receiving in the specialist press. There were some interesting ideas, sure, but they were handled with the proficiency and subtlety of a Elephant prostitute soliciting for business out of a back-alley tea shop in Cambridge.

As you said, it's a "pretty good game." I wouldn't dispute that. But 34 of the 88 critic reviews used on Metacritic gave it full marks.
