The problem with those balls is that they need cleaning a lot. 
An Optic mouse shouldn't have too much trouble with cleanliness, but its still good to give it a light clean.
As for the next question; Cable or wireless? Because with my old cable mouse, I found the wires in the end had split after a lot of use. If its wireless it could just be the battery.
