I heard that the GIMP's interface and tools are going to be improved a LOT with the new version, finally making it something that can compete with the big guys. So I suggest you stick with the GIMP too.
No sense in having two suites that are made to do the same anyway, where one of them is really expensive and more intended for people whose jobs involve graphics.
Also, don't use Paint to change the file types... The GIMP can do that, and does it a lot better (including tools and filters to "fix" JPGs with lots of artifacts and stuff like that).
