Ok, i've installed Dink v1.08 into My Documents.
As far as I can tell, all files have been installed. But, when I go to open Dink.exe, it gets to the Loading... screen and then I get an error saying it has encountered a problem and needs to close, every single time.
So then I wondered if a DMOD would work, I downloaded one and opened it, selected it to be opened by DFArc.exe. Then it says that Dinksmallwood.ini cannot be found and a C++ runtime error has occured.
But for some reason, Dinkedit.exe will load perfectly with no errors at all. Is there any way to play it through that?
In the readme.txt which came with the install, I have everything for the reccomended settings - Windows XP, 1gb space etc.
I've tried using some compatibility settings, but none give any better results.
I tried to use the -nosound parameter, but i'm not sure if I did it correctly.
Uninstalling and reinstalling to a different directory doesn't work either.
Any help towards a solution is greatly appreciated.

Ok, just a little update;
I downloaded a frontend (http://www.dinknetwork.com/display.cgi?action=File&ID=254) but still no difference to loading. ALTHOUGH, this one did tell me that "C:/Windows/Dinksmallwood.ini could not be found". So is this the source of the problem? I hadn't got a warning upon installation that this file couldn't be created. Is there any way to remedy this?
I attempted to play a DMOD that came with it also, but this is the same thing. I do, however, get a bit of sound and a loading screen.
Is there any way I can get this file (dinksmallwood.ini) and solve the problem? As I said before, re-installing it does no good.
Thanks.

Did you install the whole game or did you install only the 1.08 patch by mistake?

As far as I know, I downloaded the full game.
I downloaded it from the RTsoft.com website.
I downloaded it from the RTsoft.com website.
Interesting. Have you tried redownloading it? The package could be corrupt.

Yep, same problem. I've re-downloaded it from every mirror possible.
Anyway I could download the dinksmallwood.ini file seperately? That seems to be my only lead towards the solution.

dinksmallwood.ini should be in C:\Windows, and it looks like this:
[Dink Smallwood Directory Information for the CD to read]
E:\Dink Smallwood\
FALSE
I don't know what the first line is, but it's best to copy it.
The second line is the location of Dink.exe
I also don't know what the third line is.
After the third line ("FALSE" in this case) should be a newline (enter), but the fourth line is completely empty.

There reads TRUE instead of FALSE in my dinksmallwood.ini. Wonder what that is?
If you have Windows XP, the My Documents folder is really high up in subfolders, which is bad for some games. Install it in (C?):\Program Files\Dink Smallwood and try running the main game then. The main game creates the Dink.ini file if everything went well.
EDIT: also change that true to false. It indicates you are using the Dink CD-ROM (back when the game came on a CD-ROM this was used), but you aren't.

Sorry about the lateness of this update, i've been busy with other things.
I'd just like to thank everyone who gave me help towards this problem. It now works perfectly.
I'll be sure to drop by at any other time with questions and such.
Once again, thanks everyone.

Actually, scratch that.
I'm not getting an error for dinksmallwood.ini not found anymore, but it still isn't working.
Weird thing is, I can't find dinksmallwood.ini anywhere.
DFArc will load and i've tried all settings for it, but nothing works.
DMODs now won't install, just saying that "this directory cannot be created".

Disk full, read-only directory? Or is it something with administrator permissions (in XP)?
Can't come up with more than that at the moment.

I have a feeling it's an administrative thing.
I can play without editing the ini file though. Just means I can't save it. Is there any way to find out where you are in the game? Like code or something?

Nevermind. I managed to get the override settings to work. ^_^
