The Scar of Tarun Chapter 2: The Village Gang
Chapter 2
The Village Gang
The Great Banyan tree was the meeting place of the village gang. The attendance during these recent weeks had not been good as no one was allowed out on such hot days. When Tarun and Ajay reached the tree they saw Ram waiting for them. He was busy bandaging a baby monkey that had fallen from the tree. The baby’s mother saw that she had got the opportunity to grab her baby while Ram’s attention was away. She quickly wrapped her tail around a strong branch and leaning towards the ground swung and grabbed the baby. Ram was taken aback by the sudden interference of the mother monkey. He jumped back and stood all frightened. During this time the monkey had made off with the child climbing and jumping from one tree to another. Ajay was furious and shouted at Ram:
“How many times have we told you” Ajay spoke
“Never touch a baby of an animal, Ram. It can get neglected from the group and can be left there to die. Besides you could have hurt yourselves badly” Tarun said;
“But I………”Ram tried to speak but gave up after hearing what Tarun said;
Ram was feeling disappointed. The village people said that he had a heart of gold. He lived with his grandmother in the western part of the village. He was fairly short for a 13 year boy with a very sharp eye.
Ajay had been adopted by an orphan since he was 3 after his mother and father had died due to some water- borne disease. He was fairly tall and tough boy who was willing to fight anyone who challenged him.
Karan had just come running from the road.
“I am sorry, sorry again!!” he said breathlessly
“Will you ever come in time Karan, you are half an hour late” asked Tarun
“Mrs. Kanta’s wretched dog…. It chased me out of the village…It would have bit me but was intercepted by a mongrel” explained Karan panting
“Forget it Karan. We have now four members, LET THE MEETING COMMENCE”, shouted Tarun
The talking went on. Members came one by one and the meeting had a houseful till the night sky had appeared.
