Historical Hero - An Epic D-Mod (DEVELOPMENT)
Hi, folks! I've started a completely new D-Mod. This is because, I wanted to forget those old D-Mods of mine for a moment.
Anyways, this D-Mod is completely different style that what I usually do, and I am even myself, very interested how this will turn out to be.
Plot:
Dink thinks he has bought a manor from Eastern Islands, but suddenly notices that his house is just piece of duck-poop. When he introductes himself to some of his new neighbors, one of the people knows him, and tells that Dink's father, Nathan Smallwood, is being held as a prisoner by Goblins, in the Castle of Glamour.
Map:
The map is gonna kick the crap out of my older D-Mods' maps. This time it is gonna be HUGE and more like a real world, and not like a path you must follow all the time. This time, it is gonna be more detailed, aswell.
Gameplay:
The actual main quest, is more like a sidequest. There is gonna be so much to do in the D-Mod.
Some new features:
-You can buy a few houses in every village (you can save your game in the houses)
-There are many BookStores, and when you buy a book, it will appear in your every houses bookshelf
-A few jobs you can do every now and then to earn some money (This hasn't been confirmed yet)
-There is gonna be a list that tells you how many percent you have done of the game (from 1% to 100%)
-A girlfriend. If you bring enough gifts to her, you'll get married, and get 1% more in the game. (After you get married, you MIGHT get some more sidequests. The sidequests on this one haven't been confirmed yet).

It would probably be more interesting if you would show more than just mapping. I can’t blame you though; the things you can show really depend on your kind of D-Mod and your progress. I would be able to show a lot from my D-Mod for instance… Then again I prefer to stay silent about that until it’s done.
Screenshots of just mapping work better when you happen to have added new graphics... but that's just my oppinion

The screenshots aren't bad, but I don't think the ridge tile grass works well as base grass. It doesn't blend well with other tiles, it's easy to notice in screenshot 3.
I usually use a combination of grass from the rock tile screens, and from the forest/floor tile screen as a base. The latter looks better kept than the former, alternating them can make it look like someone's taking care of the lawn in a village, while forests have wilder freely growing grass.

Scratcher, yes, I've noticed that problem. And I'm probably gonna change those tiles somewhere, when I've nearly completed the game.

It's 'house for sale' not 'house for sell'. That was the first thing I noticed.
In screenshot 5: Did you set the dirt to 'background' instead of 'person/creature'? It looks like the dirt is actually laying on top of the wall. I think dirt should always be background (with a few exceptions of course). Dink walking behind mud doesn't seem very realistic...
Other than that it's always hard to judge screenshots. I just love to see that you are getting better and better at making DMODs.

Yeah, that's what I sometimes do. Set the "depth que" to -1. And, thanks, Marpro, but I have remembered to use the "no-hit".
And yes, just MAYBE I'm gonna still improve the map a bit.

Surely it's easier to just set it to background rather than set the depth que and the no-hit? Background = underneath everything, can't be hit, and attached scripts won't work.
Not really, background sprites can be hit, so it's the same amount of trouble. They also have a nasty tendency to disappear.
Well, it might be the same amount of trouble in DinkEdit, but not in WinDinkEdit. The only thing you need to do to make something background is to tick the 'background' box, if you want a depth que of -1 you need to type '-1' which takes slightly more effort...
Just be careful if you use mud near water, then you should use depth que -1.

Why -1? Just type in 1. However, Sparrowhawk DID have a point, even on Dinkedit, as I was wrong about backgroud sprites being hittable...
If you put minuses to the "depth que" it is almoust the same if you put it as "background". However, when you have "depth que" in minus it you have to put the "no-hit" on so it won't be hitable. But if you put the "background" on it won't be hitable.
There may not be a noticeable difference as far as normal gameplay is concerned, but background sprites and normal sprites are really quite different. Background sprites act like tiles, they're wiped out when you use fill_screen() and you can't kill them with sp_active(). I was going to follow up with deep insight as to why this is so but it just seemed really pompous because I'm not really knowledgeable about the technical aspects of Dink.

I've done with the first and the second village/area 99% now. The reason I'm saying 99% is because, you never know, if you still need to do something with them or if you forgot something.

i have an idea, forgive me if u allready thought of it. ok, i think you should also be able to buy furniture, oh and also boats! from "dink goes boating". oh and i hope you make HEAPS of secret areas in it too. if you could add like a secret or a guest apperance by me zeddexx, that would be awsome! cuz ive never been mentioned in a dmod before! ^_^
Many authors have never been mentioned in a D-Mod. Me and RAJESH are pretty much the only ones (go play Rand's Quest for axe).

The "old lady" was Ethel, in case someone forgot.
My theory is that the arson was committed by Martridge. It's way too convenient how Dink just "happened" to run into him right before the house was burnt down, then the guy goes and teaches Dink fireball. Ethel may also be involved, in fact, they may be related. She has a beard!
Also, what were the guards that harrassed a traveller doing near Stonebrook? They were probably after Martridge... And he disappeared to escape the law. It all makes sense.

Wow, that's huge! And it's so tidy and organized... My maps are always pure chaos.

Well, I always say, that every area are 99% complete. Probably the whole game when finished will be 99% only complete, since there are always stuff that you forget and such. So, there might be lots of bugs, but hey, that's why betatesting is for.
And I just happened to get much done in one day because when I start making it, then I REALLY start making it. But when I feel lazy I barely get 2% completed in 2 days.

So in 3 weeks you're able to make half an epic? How much free time do you have oh disembodied one??
Myself, I have loads of free time, but I get a sore wrist from all the graphics creating I'm doing the last couple of weeks.

Just to put that into perspective: The scourger had just 299 scripts in the betaversion. (The final version has 332 though.) And I think the scourger is a small epic already...
Paninga has a 190 scripts so far, and that has been in development for at least two years!
EDIT: The original game has 381 scripts. So in amount of scripts you're really not far of from epic territory...
Just to put that into perspective: The scourger had just 299 scripts in the betaversion. (The final version has 332 though.) And I think the scourger is a small epic already...

Initiation had just over 400 scripts, Pilgrim's Quest had around 650 scripts, and CC2 was just shy of 800.

It has been a few weeks, and I haven't made much progress at all. I'm about 15% done with the 5th sector. But happy news, I've made a little progress today, so on this week, I might get back working on it with 100% attitude.

I actually made little progress today. I made a few new screens. Fixed dozens of mapping errors and bugs in scripts (thanks Robj). I also changed a few things and made a glowing bonca, that appears randomly on some screens.
The game is completed about 70%.

Yea Rob, I was thinking to take you as betatester again. You did a great job on the early beta. Plus, you know how to get the other parts fast, though there are couple of changes.

I'm glad you look at it that way Skull. I've spent over 3 months scripting the boss fight in Day of the Carcass just because I couldn't accept a hit and run battle. I'm looking forward to this

Most DMODs that are announced and not released were "at least 90% complete". Unless I know that this figure is objectively measured somehow I don't know how to interpret these percentages.

I never tried to say that I think this will be a bad or even mediocre DMOD. I simply do not know how this will turn out. And that is what I'm trying to say, though obviously I'm happy to see progress. As far as I see it this will be the first epic DMOD in 4-5 years which is good.
But as I haven't played even one bit of this DMOD I just don't know how this will turn out. We'll see, I hope for the best.

Finished? As I understood there are quite a few side quests as well. So Skull probably still has to tie up quite some loose ends. But still, nice to hear it's going strong.

Dude, I have a flu and I'm tired. It shouldn't have too many bugs, so I just decided to upload it. The case would be different, if I was pretty sure there are probably some GIANT BUGS.
Sorry to say Skull, but some of your DMODs had a lot of annoying bugs in the past. So I'll have to agree with Glenn on this one, I'll wait playing this one untill people have done some bug hunting.

That's part and parcel of development, Skull. I know it's frustrating, but even the most experienced d-mod authors need to get their files tested... particularly with an epic!

Yes, I uploaded it three hours before you told me that I'm a n00b. Then you waited another hour to actually tell me about 4shared.com. And don't try to say I didn't check out all options I knew, because I did.
Again; I appologised for that. I had Literally just woken up and had course to go to. Which turned out to be fail anyway. Only three other people attended, and even the tutor was away; He'd broken a tooth on a piece of steak he apparently cooked for himself XD

Ouch. I'm currently stuck at the part where you have to find the diamond, and I have to say... there are lots of minor glitches all over the game. Stuff like invisible hardboxes where there shouldn't be any, monster balance out of whack, and too much walking around unimportant maps (thank god for those herb boots tho)
Not to mention having to deal with all those unhelpful NPC's... (for example: "kill those bandits!" "where should I look for them?" "I don't know, just find them!") Half of time playing this game I've had no clue what I'm supposed to be doing.

There are plenty of hardness bugs in this release. Though I actually haven't found a way to get out of the first village and its maze without exploiting the one which allows you to walk on the mountains (and then you'll see that they look somewhat messed up). I got straight from the first village to the cutscene with two guards that closed the pub and then finally was able to get into other areas.
s3-bluelady.c is buggy, by the way, if you choose "Leave" option, you are frozen. That's because the script never checks this option, it has a number of 7, but the script checks option 6 twice instead.

Dude, I've said hundreds of times that I tried to upload it to every place I knew and tried to send it in e-mail to my testers, but the file was just too big. Of course, I would have had it tested if it would have worked.

iplaydink - the exit (stairs going down) is there, just look for it a little harder.

I get upset because I worked on this D-Mod hard and nobody sees nothing but the bad sides of it.
Also, gmail is the exact one I tried to e-mail it from, but it said that the maximum size of the file was 35MB, and so did all the other sites I tried to upload it to.

You mean walk beetwen the forest or cliffs, or walk on top of the forest. If you meant the first one, yes you are, if you meant the second one, certainly not.
Find some testers I guess. People that play it now will probably do so for fun and occasionally report a bug that they encountered. If you have people specifically looking for bugs you'll have better results. I’ll do some bug hunting myself when I can find the time (two good D-Mods on the same day, don‘t expect people to be quick with the feedback ).
I could also check for bugs, do you want me to PM them to you or post here?

WTF, the game is completely messed up. After I copied it from my desktop to my laptop, even probably around 200 screens have disappeared.

Now I got it. The game somehow has taken the map entirely from like... 4 months back. Very strange, must have something to do with the fact that I copied it with my memory stick. That's why there are so many hardness bugs too. Dammit, should have seen something like this showing up.

Instead of copying the Historical Hero's D-Mod folder and packaging it on my laptop, I packaged it on my desktop, and then moved the package to my laptop.

finally an epic dmod good job
need a little help found the following problems
there is still lots of hardness blocks specially the guy's house who gives the quest to find the missing page,the maze is long and empty with just few trees,horrible midi during moving around the maze and after an hour or so found the stairs and got 50 xp now cant seem to find anything in the maze just a few pillbugs its empty?

Lod420, be sure to download the new version (1.02.) because it has a lot less hardness errors, and you can't actually finish the D-Mod in older versions due to a stupid mistake by my computer.
Well, I can help you with some of those problems; if you've found the stairs that lead you to a small cave, you are in the right place, but you just have to look harder.

hey thanks for the quick reply i am playing with 1.02 version there was lots of hardness in the mayors house as well,well ok will check up and see if there is anything else there except for the fragile rock cant seem to do anything with it sorry for disclosing the spoilers
There might be some hardness errors still in the first village, but I fixed that stuff in the next towns.
Also, the music in the maze is "kind" of supposed to be annoying, cause I know people will try to search the right way for quite some time, so the music is supposed to piss them off. But I also think the music fits the maze extremely well.
