Contest: Failure D-Mod Entries
I certainly failed to anticipate the number of entries for the Failure D-Mod Contest. Eight entries have been submitted, so make sure to download them and try your best to fail.
Eligible staff members will be contacted soon for instructions on how to judge the entries. In the event of a tie, I will decide the victor(s). If any of the D-Mods are updated from now on, staff members must only play first versions below.
And now, in alphabetical order...
Attack of the Evil Wizard by VonZeppelin. Dink must stop the Evil Wizard Ermadgrit from destroying the world.
Basilisk Smile (The) by SabreTrout. During a voyage across the ocean, the Dink's ship is raided by Goblin Corsairs. Fleeing in a lifeboat, he finds himself on a small, strangely quiet island...
Ex-Peppermint by sqwatermelon. Dink ends up in a messed up place for some reason unbeknownst to him. Consequently he wants to get out.
Fall of Tahmar (The) by Marpro. Meet strange enemies, visit new towns and venture into deep forests.
Honor Quest (The) by cypry. Dink spent the night with a girl, and finds that she's pregnant. You play the "honorable" Martridge, trying to find a husband for her, so our beloved hero won't be dishonored.
If Ducks Ruled the World by wesley. Dink gets sent on a crap quest up north and must settle an ambigious disturbance between two villages.
Prelude by joshriot. Apparently, a prelude to something.
Return to Rathor by carrie2004. Dink returns to the past to try and make 'nice' with the elves in an effort to prevent a future war.
Edit (9/26 10:20 PM EST): I somehow forgot about Marpro's entry, The Fall of Tahmar. I've added it to the list.

NOTICE: my dmod REQUIRES VERSION 1.08
can you put this in the description please?
can you put this in the description please?
I am one of the first of noticing this new post I will play from reverse alphabetical order, so, the DMod of Carrie is the one I will play first. Hope to not crash my computer.
Ah, it is so good to have new DMods again!
Ah, it is so good to have new DMods again!
Hmm i guess thats makes me 2nd or 3rd . i will start from the smallest size file and work up to the bigger sizes. so im goin with SabreTrout first and VonZepplin last.
anyone figure how to get off the first screen in ex minty yet? i walk into the warp and it essential fades down into nothingness
Well I forgot to put that mine requires 1.08 and true color mode so it would be nice if you who can could add that.
And about getting off the screen in Ex-pepperment. Being the one who made the D-mod I don't know what is going on as it always worked for me...O_o You may need to un-check D-Bug mode as that has mysteriously caused major problems for me in the past.
Edit:
Although, it can take a bit for it to load... ...Maybe you are not waiting long enough?o_O

anyone who downloaded my dmod already please do the following
go to story dir
open iten-sw1.c
scroll down to add() to where you see strength +100
change 100 to 10
or you can just keep it and get like 100000 strength from equipping the sword over and over
sorry about that. i uploaded a fixer script

8 entries? That must be one of the largest contests here on the network?

8 Entries is very good, I'm gonna have a fun time playing all of you're D-Mods
it doesnt require true color mode at all it uses windmere trees but i changed them all to 256 color mode dink pallete and added the little shadows and everything. the whole game can be played in dink pallete mode, actually, you get a special effect when you die when in normal color mode that you do NOT get in true color mode. *pallete change
Yeee.... new dmods.
The Basilisk Smile... It is so serious, so intense... I've tried 4 D-Mods so far, and this is the best of the 4 I tried. Really.
Such a sad ending... :'(
Such a sad ending... :'(
I could only find four endings. What's the fift one.
Hey, Erwin btw, did you finish my? (Just want to see if I made it so others actually can complete it )
I started them all, except for Marpro's which I'm downloading right now. My favorite one was joshriot's prelude.
Edit: I downloaded Marpro's failure... I mean DMOD It was probably one of the best first DMODs ever(maybe not as good as Green Voice in my head, but still better than many). Although it has a few bugs, the DMOD is, in my opinion, the best from this contest. Allow me to congradulate you, Marpro. You have all my respect.

I had the same problem with minty. Warp faded down, the text was all still there and flashing a bit but it never loaded a new screen. Tried it windowed and full-screen :/
Yes I finished your D-Mod Marpro, I really liked it. And your D-Mod is nice too cypry.
Wesly: "I had the same problem with minty. Warp faded down, the text was all still there and flashing a bit but it never loaded a new screen. Tried it windowed and full-screen :/"
There really shouldn't be any problem. You must not be waiting long enough I guess.O_o The warp doesn't have any scripting and the next screen doesn't either.
Maybe you need to leave both of the options un-hit?o_O
Edit:
Oh yeah, it has been working for every one other then you two so that makes things more confusing. Also try debug mode off it doesn't work well all the time with debug on.

i didnt touch the options it just fades down into nothing and stays there
I waited around 20-30 seconds... should be long enough to load any midis or graphics on my machine.
Yeah, I didn't hit any options either :/ I didn't spend much time with it though. I will try to narrow down what is happening later tonight if I get a chance. I didn't try it in non-true color, but it doesn't sound like that will matter anyway.
EDIT: non-windowed, non-truecolor mode, the fade down was very slow but that is probably a hardware issue with my comp
EDIT: I changed the start-1.c file to just start me on the beach and skipped the first screen. Hopefully that doesn't ruin anything with variables or anything like that.

EEP, double post... anyway, it's a new subject.
Does AOTEW behave correctly, or are there bugs. I notice that after a while things start to not work. Is that the way it is suppossed to be?. I found a cave, but I can't enter it. Savebots stop working... I die and I can still walk around and hit stuff/get hit, but ESCAPE doesn't work... you have to hit people to talk to them? Anyway, just checking if I am just not doing what I am meant to or if those are bugs.

I had the exact same problem with AOTEW, although ex-peppermint works fine for me. Interesting...
I really liked IDRTW. I did notice a few bugs though - want me to send you a list?

I haven't got around to checking the DN since uploading my entry. I can't wait to try some of the other d-mod's!
Oh yes, and thanks very much DaVince. I be happy you be liking it.

Thanks,
Yeah, send it on I didn't get to play test much so I figured there would be some. Hopefully they weren't too major :/
EDIT: Is Martridge really that promenent of a character? He is in like half of these entries?

Glad to see my files put to use and creddited. Cypry spelled my last name wrong though

Sorry... when I'll release an update, you'll have your name spelled correctly.

It's funny- I knew that my D-Mod sucks, but I still wanted to release it for the contest?
Weird, no?
Weird, no?
I don't think it sucks... actually, I can't tell if it sucks or not. It just isn't playable at all. For as many scripts that are in there, you can only seem to play through like 5 minutes before nothing functions.
Seems very odd... I tried playing through it on my own computer.... and I managed to get to the ending... Hmm, I'll take another look at the scripting and see what I can do...
EDIT: I have similar problems with Prelude, where none of the scripts seem to work ands it crashes after startup ... Perhaps compatibility issues with Dink 1.08 AURAL+? In any case, I think that I will try and avoid it in the future.
EDIT2: I played through the D-Mod just now, and had the same problems, but I was able to remedy them. Even so, I still feel this one is a bit trite and hastily-scripted, and really just isn't in the same sort of cadre as Smile of the Basklisk and The Fall of Tahmar... both of which are simply excellent in my opinion.

Prelude works fine for me, but I can't talk to anyone in your D-mod VonZeppelin. After like 5-10 min the monsters freeses and I can't press escape to quit
Very odd. The intro was very well, so I don't doubt the game is bad at all, but it seems little buggy right now

I'm currently trying to play through fall of thamar, kudos to MarPro on its goodness *golf claps*
There are still a few bugs I cannot figure out, some missing scripts, some holes in the plot, etc... , but the new version should be playable...
I guess it is alright, still not great like the others though- and from a technical perspective, it really doesn't have anything new to offer at all (I borrowed as much scripting as I could from the original game, even the bosses are based off the pillbug script )

Don't beat yourself up over it, I'm sure it's a playable MOD and we're all happy that you contributed to the contest, and for all you know people might like your MOD very much. The solution is learn from your mistakes and improve, you'll get it right in the end!
Sorry about my long absense... I'm going to get right on playing these d-mods.
Have fun, then.
You have had a month to play the D-Mods now... Am I the only one who thinks this is getting little slow?
Yeah, we're pretty lazy (and I lost my computer, so I was out for about a month)... but 8 d-mods at once is a good bit to play through and critique. I've played through most of them that could be played through. I only have 2 more to finish.
I am having a particularly difficult time finding the motivation to play these D-Mods, or to do anything with my life lately for that matter.
If you had entered the contest, you wouldn't have to play any other DMOD
The results will be announced Friday, November 3rd, at 6:00 pm EDT.
Ehr... Great, but... There isn't a friday novemver 4th, that's a saturday
Is it on the 3th?
Is it on the 3th?
Sorry, I meant the 3rd. And it'll be this year, Mr. Magicman
If you had entered the contest, you wouldn't have to play any other DMOD
Hence my 5 minute long d-mod. Boo-yah!
