Having a familiar...
In "Warlock" the main character is going to get a familiar, but I can't decide whether to have a choice, and what the familiars shall be.
I'm thinking that what familiar you get depends on a decision you make, or whether you are good or bad.
Thoughts people?
And what Dink things would you like to see as a familiar?

A fairy would be cool. As well as a small bonca.
And yes, questions to decide what familiar you get sounds good.
And I don't think everyone understands what you mean by familiar.

Yes. It was introduced in the RPG Dungeons & Dragons. Basically, it's a wizard's best friend which he can summon and has a telepathic bond with. There's usually pretty weak as well.

You could add alot of replay value if you do that familiar idea right.
normally, i would assume that you would do sometyhing like pilgrims quest, you dont summon it, but you attach a script to each screen that makes a monster at your spot and targets whatever, instead of making a magic item that does that
I have made a very simple familiar before (a small bonca following Dink around), but hopefully this will be a fair bit more than that.
The familiar in itself probably won't have a very large effect on gameplay, but maybe the sort of spells you get. A fairy for being Good, a little Imp for being bad, or a little Bonca for being...wild?
Something along those lines will be cool.
Hopefully I'll get a demo of "Warlock" out soon, by Christmas I should think.

what about a big nasty strong slayer as familiar?
Make the game very hard to beat and the only thing you must do is to make sure you stay alive : let your huge indestructible slayer do all the work for you !!! ofcourse the game has to be very tactical 'cause otherwise it would be silly and boring !!!
think about it !!!

Before being spirits that assumed animal forms and helped wizards/witches they were servants and sometimes spies of the Catholic Church. Usually working for the Pope and members of the Inquisition in return for support (wages/lodging turning a blind eye to charges of heresy)

You could always have a duck. It's a little quirky, but that's never stopped and d-mod author before.
But anyhow, I think the most important thing is that the familiar be interesting somehow. For example how about if it could cast any spell dink knew (though less often or lessstrongly perhaps). I don't even think getting to pick which kind you get is super important, just so long as whatever kind you get is interesting.

That's not a very good idea IMHO, but you bring up a good point.
Should the familiar be killable, or will you just assume it's too small and quick, stays our of the way, or whatever and make it unhitable.

It's just an idea to think about, not my next d-mod about a Godzillaslayer thing that follows you through the whole dang mod!!!
I was exaggerating just to make sure you got the point!!!
come on you guys, try to read between the lines and not word after word...

Okay... That I didn't know about familiars Interesting though.

Hmm... I haven't heard that one either. It's an... interesting take on their origins, considering most "sorcercy" (pagan rituals and the like) was around way before the Catholic Church or even Christ. In fact, it's really more associated with witches (their black cat) than with the church. The church or witchhunters, however, did use the accusations of owning familiars (who were deemed demons in disguise by the church) to use as evidence against suspected witches.
That's basically what I can think of without researching it further.

Maybe you should try saying what you mean instead... I've heard that's a good way to get a point across.

I'm probably gonna have it so you get 1 of 2 (or maybe 3) familiars, depending on whether you are good or evil. A fairy and a small Impish creature, or a small bonca...or dragon...

I don't recommend a dragon, since it only walks in vertically and horizontally
Dream Theater rocks

It doesn't need to go any other way, so a dragon would do just fine...

I mean that if a dragon will follow you, it will look kinda weird when he just walks in those directions. A bonca for example would look much better because he can make the same movements as Dink
