Stuck in Terris

I just started playing, but I'm wondering if my game has a fluke in it. I'm in Terris, already rescued the guy in the cave and all that... Went past the poles where you need the scroll and up to the area with the dragon carcass. At this point the path is blocked by trees and Dink says "what a lovely backyard." I checked the cheat sheets and there's supposed to be four ladies here that turn into bonkas for me to fight. The girls aren't there, just the dragon carcass, and I can't get into the area because of the trees. I've also tried fireballs on the trees but they don't work.
Any suggestions???

If the girls aren't there, you have to go back to the mother again, that usually works. Also, you must've done all the things leading up to this event, otherwise they might not be here.

Hömm.. You haven't done something, that's for sure, try doing everything possible.. Like talking to the blue man in the bar. If you haven't talked to the red lady a few screens from the bar, you must do that before the girls will appear.

Talked to the blue man, but the red lady?? The only ladies I could find were Nadine, who lost the kid, the waitress, and the red cross lady?

Yeah, Nadine, try talking to her again. You need to specifically agree to save her. Just hearing that she's missing isn't enough.
