Upcoming Board Changes (Yay)

I've made the decision of re-writing the board so it is heavily intergrated into the next web design, due sometime in December (maybe). It'll be faster and such, and I'll (hopefully) be able to convert the current board over to the new one, so no messages would be lost.

So... I'm pretty sure I'm going to do the following changes:

* Remove the ICQ/AIM/YIM/MSN icons underneath a user's icon. They'll simply be moved to each individual user profile.

* A better quoting system, for use when replying to a message. It'll display their name and such, and more.

* Slight tweaks to the different views (Threaded, Non-Threaded), and new view choices, and new options.

* Message Board Moderation by Staff.

But... I'm not sure how I can make a fair moderation system. My main idea is to have at least 2 Staff agree to tag a message 'off-topic' or something. By default, you wouldn't be able to see any off-topic posts (or replies to them), but you can if you choose to.

Also, if you have any other board changes, post a reply.

What about a sort of, um, I don't know, having messages sorta marked for moderation if lets say more than 5 different non-staff people say so, and put it in a hidden state if more than 25 people mark it for moderation? You'd have to put limits on it, maybe no more than 1 mod per day per person, and that you have to use your username and psword. Yes, it might be flawed or hard to program, but what about for Miasma 2? (sp?)

I really don't think non-staff moderation would be a good idea... I can hold staff accountable for their actions (if they abused the moderation system) by taking away their staff-status. There is no way to hold non-staff members accountable... they can always create a new account, get another ISP, go through an IP proxy to mask their IP address, and so on. And the coding would be a nightmare as well... I think I know a good way to make it work for staff, but opening it up to everyone... I can't think of an easy way.

What about Miasma 2? The Board is basically going to be a part of it... along with several other brand new features.

I was just thinking if you were going to implement it, that you could do it along with Miasma 2.... but as its not gonna happen, oh well.

How about something I have suggested several times already, eh? The possibility to delete/edit your own posts! Like most other boards allow. I'd find it quite useful.

: Yeah, that's a good idea.

I think so too, but I think you should only be able to edit until a reply is made.

I've thought about it... but I don't like the idea of not being accountable for your actions...

Like if Bob calls Dave a complete moron, then Dave responds with a flame. Then Bob changes his message to say how he considers Dave a friend... then tells the staff that Dave is being a flamer for no reason... and it just causes problems.

And with deleting your own posts, that deletes all responses to your posts... and so on.

Of course, that's usually the case on every board.

Maybe I just don't browse very many forums, but I've never seen anything like that happen..

Whoops, I submitted that too soon. *ahem* As I was going to say, you could have a little message in edited posts saying "Mr. Doodles edited this post at 01:02:03 AM Sat. Nov. 2nd", or something along that line.
