If you join the chat room, and there is no @ChanServ member in it, chances are you landed on a server that is disconnected from the central network. At the time I wrote this text, this is the case with the "newyork.ny.us.spidernet.org" server. Should that happen to you, you can either try to connect to "irc.spidernet.org" and hope that you'll be sent to a different server, or join some other server in the spidernet.org network. The one I'm currently connected to, for instance (bradford.uk.eu.spidernet.org) works fine. The best way to check that you're on a disconnected server is to join the #spidernet channel, and see if it has a lot of Ops in it. If not, leave.
