no, but they are supposedly still out there - either on seth's or justin's...uh, wherever they put them.

so far, seth has been pretty evasive.

why? it's not like anyone would ever monetize them for something so ultra-niche as dink. in the modern age where every game from overwatch to uncharted to quake has ripped 3d assets in their highest quality with working rigs, it makes no sense to keep them hidden.

literally only good things could happen if they were released. nobody would see the quality of them as anything other than charming after twenty four years of the game existing.

if he does not have the 3d studio max scenes then he should just admit it.

here is my assumption

seth has noticed fans have made better ports (free dink > dink high definition)
seth has noticed fans have made better games in the dink smallwood engine (the disciple, prophecy of the ancients, milli vanilli)
seth is holding on to one of the last things he has that other people cannot improve

I was in the boat of FreeDink>DinkHD until recently too. But DinksmallwoodHD is better than FreeDink now since the recent updates. I mean they are both on par, performance wise and compatibility wise now, but now DinkHD also has extra functions, and obviously the bells and whistles that come with "HD". Pair it with drones martridge launcher and you can have all the versions easily installed anyway(freedink and DinkHD), and run everything in a very convenient way.

Anyway,the models would be good. Would really help create more actual Dink graphics, rather than editing them frame by frame for hours like ExDeathevn had to do to make the shield graphics. I hope they are released one day.

Like 20+ years ago I WAS thinking I should keep these models private because we'd use them for Dink Smallwood 2 (3? I don't know what to call it) , but .. yeah, that ain't happening. And a few years after that it became obvious they were too old and broken to be used for anything so I just ignored them.

Anyway, I just spent the last hour digging through backups as I've realized it will save time to just release everything rather than deal with conspiracy theories about them eternally, so without further ado:

The magical Dink 3dsmax stuff, with textures and other strangeness (137 MB)

So PLEASE if anybody can setup the correct environment to be able to read and export them to a more modern format (blender?) please convert them and share them so anybody can use them. Knowing what this entails, may God have mercy on your soul.

And BTW, I would *LOVE IT* if someone found them useful to help make a DMOD or dinkish game with them, so please do, anybody. Everybody.

Legal:

* I can't guarantee the textures are all legal to distribute, some may be from a texture library etc making it legally grey, but from what I looked at, the textures seems mostly made by Justin Martin. Credit to ALL of this goes to him, and if you ever end up using any of it, please give him credit as he's amazing.

* Of the parts that I do legally own, I release them under the same license as the dink bmp art, ie, do whatever you want, just don't pretend to be me or infringe on the name Dink Smallwood (ie, don't callanything Dink Smallwood 2 please because you never know)

i've been snooping around and this is probably the best thing to be uh, kinda released for the dn. so much unused shit - some fat guy with a leather apron, a scorpion enemy, a ducking thing called a winged GAT. there's shields, there's a whole series of milder models where he's got some kinda vanguard helmet and gets promoted to general armour and another set of general armour with a red cape and so many other unused models i had no idea existed. it's a ducking trip and everyone should find an old copy of 3ds max and look through this stuff.

upright, walking slayer is ducking awesome.

Ok, so after talking with Skurn on discord and stuff, we figured out that all the textures used hardcoded absolute paths.

I tried to make a tool that replaces all the hardcoded paths with relative paths automagically in the .max files. The source for it is on github over here: https://github.com/drone1400/DinkModelPathFixer

Basically, these should work in old versions of 3D Studio Max, and when you render the models they should have working textures. There were some errors though, for more info about them check the log file in the one drive zip, and read the info under Possible errors on github.

Some files probably need some additional manual tweaking, also they would still all need to be converted into something that Blender can use!...

it means the floodgates have been opened for new versions of dink's sprites and edits! a lot of fun things will happen for future dmods!

@liquid it's the original 3ds max scenes that were rendered into sprites for the actual game

Reuploaded the archive on onedrive (same link) since I accidentally zipped it with Bzip2 compression instead of Deflate, so older versions of WinRAR (and apparently default Windows 11 zip lelelel) couldn't extract it.

Hopefully someone can actually convert the models to blender soon

someone get a hold of iplaydink. dude has blender experience. in fact, shit, bluedy and ipd could make a good team if all that stuff can be fully converted. maybe dink could even get a nose and some eyes instead of blue holes.

This thread is why we should be able to embed images.

Along with the non-toilet and walking slayer, there's a lot of other interesting stuff such as this prepared scene. And, after all these years, we finally get to find out what the signs actually have written on them.

Also, ebilv, your program appears to be attempting to overwrite the preset render path in some of them leading to misreported errors. I'm guessing it just indiscriminately scans for strings. R3 has the ability to set a search path for textures which also sidesteps the need for this.

Yeah pretty much. I should look into the file format more closely to figure out which are actual textures.

What's R3? Is that a version of 3DS Max or what?

hello, i have retopologized the original Dink Smallwood sprites and rigged them with mixamo and it turned out wonderful.

i am waiting for my email to activate my account. does it usually take this long? i would like to upload the entire file set, i have it in fbx, max, 3ds, obj, and dae (i do not use blender)

this is not me trying to take credit for dink but to simply give a modern alternative model that can be easily posed with a modern 3ds max biped or a mixamo biped (that has a ton of animations on the mixamo website)

hell yeah, another 3d artist of some sort.

and if you didn't get an email right away, you never will. there's been an ongoing bug where, it seems, certain email providers have blacklisted or auto-delete anything from the dn. its been getting looked at off and on and the only way anyone has found to solve it is to go in and request a lost password.

I think the DN still is having account creation email issues.
Try pressing forgot password, and putting your information in (the same as the account you created), others have said this will send you a password reset link and force activate your account.

Wow! That sounds amazing! There have been some issues with account registration emails not being sent out...

Some users report that using the Reset Password option sends out the email, but you might need to wait 24h in between attempts?...

I'll pester Redink on discord about it too... Feel free to join the discord, linked in the chat section, and pester him yourself too

Yeah, Max R3 and later will automatically find the textures wherever they're strewn. Unfortunately, they won't work with the various necessary plugins (apart from maybe Character Studio) needed for certain aspects of animation, such as the fountain's water. For those, R1.2 or R2.5 are needed, along with the relevant plugin.

In terms of exporting, I managed to make an STL of the church which I then printed out.
