I've been playing this for a few days and found two instances which lock up the game, forcing a reload from the last save.

When Dink catches his first Blue Dory fish, if he eats it, the game freezes. Dink cannot move. If Dink leaves the screen with the pond, then comes back and catches another Blue Dory, then Dink can eat the second fish and game play continues.

Randomly, with no noticeable pattern, if Dink tries to push closed (push east) the stone gate in the village, game play freezes, forcing a manual reboot from the previous save. If Dink is instructed to be sure to push the stone gate closed, then it works as expected and game play continues.

I using DFarc under Linux (Kubuntu 19.04).

I like this game!

I use kubuntu too!!

And like the game too!!

However, I haven't experienced any of this

I can eat any blue dory perfectly fine
And never freeze with the stone.
Although I am not sure if I tried without being instructed

Sorry, I'm unable to reproduce that one. Maybe you tried to do things too quickly, and you interrupted an animation that was supposed to take place as soon as Dink had caught his first Blue Dory fish? Is there anything else you can tell me about when this "lockup" happened?

Hmmm. I cannot reproduce this one either. Maybe you needed to wait for an animation to be complete (such as the little moggle teleporting away) or the same little guy giving instructions?

I know that sometimes I can get past problems in Dink game play by just not trying to rush things.

I use Ubuntu 16.04 for all of my Dink game play and most of the testing I do for my dmods.

That's great to hear. I'm pleased to learn that you enjoy it.
According to Silberfarben's review of the 1.00 version, though, he said he had trouble defeating "the final boss", because I made him too hard to defeat. Did you have that trouble too? Do you think I should I include an easy mode for the last battle? I found that if I made sure that I had "leveled up" Dink as much as I could and if I followed the techniques for defeating "the final boss" that I detailed in walkthrough.html that I could be victorious every time. How did you do?

Hmmm. Well, if you make it there, please try to answer the above questions, especially the one about whether or not you think the game needs an "easy mode" for the final battle. I worked hard on what happens when you defeat Hashut(*), and I'd really like everyone to see the results of that effort.

The original Valhalla game contained this guard reaction, and I kept it. This is a just a silly joke based on the idea that we know this is a game, not reality.

As for entering the house he is guarding, well, you'll find out more about that later.

Hi,
using debian10 'buster' i do have lock ups indeed. VDArc v3 should have an ESCape button to break lose from wild running mods.
In the game i am chacing those purple ones while freezing to death, you know.
and when i finished the last one and having a split blod left
my WHOLE game freeses!!
not yust rinkedink (frozen you know)
probaly becouse the last energy is recounted BEFORE the resrceening of the next screen, thus, i get stuck on the screen i LEAVE while i should DIE on the screen THATS NOT YET drawn !!
ergo, playing full screen as well,
ALT TAB saves the day
EXECPT that i have to hard break down the game with the big |X|, losing all my hard frozen balls, points, i mean

So then if Dink is dying on one screen you somehow are able to move to another? If that is what is causing the game to crash, then perhaps you would do better if you just allowed Dink to die on the screen he starts to die in?

Sorry, I'm unable to reproduce this problem. Since I'm also having some difficulty understanding your description of exactly how this happens, perhaps I'm not doing the same things you are. About all I can tell you is that I very rarely play the game "full screen", so maybe you will have greater success if you avoid that too.

its eg the screen above the logbook note. the frost takes energy and you will die soon. if you fight this goes faster. with strength 9 i can manage it, but
entering the next screen STARTS in some occations with drawing energy, just like getting outside after the rats, which realy creep alnog the walls like rats do, good one.
but if you have only 2 or 3 points energy left and you move to a screen that WILL take energy it goes wrong. i asume the energy is take as first job off the refreshed screen and Dink is 'decleared death' by the system
but the system wants to refresh the screen and gets meanwhile a double message
refresh screen, and restart sequence which will draw text

there was yesterday 1 single time that Dink was death, with white letters and text moving up while i still could MOVE Dink UNTIL the death-scroll-sequence was over and i was 'forced' into the restart screen and choose a saved game.

I have a debian 'buster' system from 8 feb 2020, this month.

IF, I understand what you are telling me, it sounds like you are describing the fact that there are some situations where Dink dies in the harsh winds of the blizzards that rage on in the land of Frostmere, and that this can cause a "double message" to be displayed as Dink expires.

So, while the game play itself was not affected since it is the case that Dink was about to die anyway (probably because he was not eating enough and/or keeping a good reserve of food handy in his magic backpack), your concern is that the game ends oddly.

I'll see what I can do to try to reproduce that issue so that I can try to fix it, but it sounds to me like you are at least able to play the bulk of the game normally. Good luck!

Okay, that was pretty clear. I now understand what to do to reproduce this issue. In fact I am now able to reproduce it at will. But, despite several attempts to solve the problem, I can't figure out what to do about it. Sorry.

Again, since it sounds like Dink is dying anyway in this scenario, aside from the inconvenience of having to do something about the locked up game, at least you are not really loosing anything.

Hello,

It might be the following order and probably some routines that works BESIDE each other now instead off after each other.

mean while i have troubles with the sound volume. i have to set my monitor at volume ONE else it to LOUD ..realy
but now i know that my monitor does have a loud speaker volume so i should reverse it and complaion with other programmers its to SOFT... ergo ...

i never programmed a dink.
if i only LOOK at that block puzzle called 'editor' i get it warm and cold at one side in my brain.
WHY did the developper CHOOSE for 'instand save AFTER WHAT EVER YOU TOUCHED AND DID NOT SEE'

Hey SlipDink!

Been playing Crown of Stone for a while now and when I get to Karl Ondrous shop and examine either the banana or the fish with the handle, the game locks up. I can't do anything, dink just stands there. I have to reload a quicksave to be able to play again, and the same thing happends all the time, no matter if I choose to inspect the Banana or the Fish with handle!

Please can you fix this?

Game freezing and needing to reboot the game is super annoying. After the Prison I have very low HP so everywhere I go I just die and screen freezes. Very stupid.

I suggest you remove this crap thank you!

EDIT: This Dmod is actually completely unplayable, it went fine at first but after you get to Frostmore with all the snow and wind that hurts you the game becomes unplayable, also the locked screens with the Ice boncas freezes Dink so I cant move or attack or do anything, then he dies from the Ice Bonkas.

Is this a Dink HD issue? If so, why is that? :/

Perhaps you would find the game easier if you read the walkthru.html file in the crwnston directory? Certainly there are many others who played the game successfully.

Many players report problems playing this and many other dmods with the HD version of the Dink Engine. I am unable to even test any dmods using Dink HD. Perhaps you did not notice in the description (that is displayed by Dfarc for this dmod) the following text? ---> [#2 According to Robj's Version Checker I have tested this dmod under "GNU FreeDink for Linux 109.6" AND "Dink Smallwood (for Windoze) 1.08 Vanilla" using WINE 3.0.4 on Ubuntu 16.04. Any other versions of the Dink Engine may not be able to run this dmod normally.]

EDIT:
I'm about to upload the 1.01e version of the dmod, which should warn users of possibly incompatible Dink Engines if/when it detects them.
